NBLC Community Mapping Initiative
Purpose
The Black Literacy Map is an interactive mapping tool that organizes literacy resources, programs, and community data across Nashville into one explorable platform. This tool enables users to see where literacy supports exist, identify potential gaps in services or resources, and connect individuals, businesses, and local organizations with the resources available to them.
This map collects together three kinds of information: resources (including libraries, community centers, digital inclusion services, and bookstores), educational and community data (such as literacy, demographic, and educational outcome data that illustrate community needs), and programs (including afterschool programs and summer programs).
Why It Matters
By making Nashville’s Black literacy resources, data, and programs visible in one organized space, this map will help families find support faster, help organizations work together and consider expansions more effectively, and empower advocates and researchers with the evidence they may need to address and combat ongoing literacy gaps strategically. While these resources have historically existed in silos, this map addresses that issue by bringing them together in one space.
